Project 3: Dover Demon Rework 2

I added a tree to the image, making the branches reach out from off-page towards the text, which I also enlarged. I think this helps break up the sky while also adding to the creepy atmosphere I am trying to build. Let me know what you think.

  1. I like it, the tree being added, adds to the creepy atmosphere. Have you thought about enlarging just the letter T in the title, and have it bleed of the poster.

  2. Tom H,

I was a little skeptical about detail being added to the sky, because of lack of detail being intentional due to night viewing and vision. I find, however, that its actually improved with it! I have noticed however, that I get this feeling that the image is in two halves. I have discovered that this is because of the brightness of the image versus the light source. What we are experiencing is a lack of depth reaching bright in the front to dark in the back, which would reflect the value change from the light source. If the area behind the car were darker, it would blend into the darkness of the sky better as well.

An alternate use of the type would be to depict it in a way that reflects a labeling of a video camera on film. That could really solidify the idea of this as an encounter.

  3. Tom – Adding more depth to this composition is not a bad idea… it can continue to be a dark value… but that is what is missing… you have elements in the foreground and mid-ground… what about far back there? Where did the car come from? Are we missing some of the story that could help us understand who is inside the car? What details could be added to intrigue the viewer?

The tree is absolutely a good idea, because it breaks up the overwhelming darkness, and lack of detail, in the sky. I say add more stark, sharp, and creepy branches… pointing to the title. And I also agree with Carl – be a typographer… be more creative with the text. It will not detract from the composition, but rather add interest to it.
