Project 2 Rework: Chisel & Saw Magazine

The goal of this project was to create a magazine cover, contents page, and feature spread based on a topic of our choosing. I chose to create a woodworking magazine because my dad is a woodworker and I thought it would be interesting to do a project based on a topic that I've grown up around. I've made some modifications from the original pieces; let me know what you think.

  1. Hi Tom w/gasses. I noticed page 52 and 32 is not even or consistent with the rest of the format of the other page numbers. I also think the bottom picture should be placed even with the text. That's all I got for you on this project. Looks great I like the arrangement of the elements.

  2. Tom – there is some good work here. Some thoughts:

    1. Cover – your cover title doesn’t really fit well in the space you’ve left for it at the top of the page. But… you, yourself, have solved this issue. I notice that you have used Cap and Small Caps for this title in your running footer. I think that font styling will work better enlarged and used on your cover. Having all the type sit on 1 line makes sense to me also… leaving more room for an enlarged subtitle “The Woodworker’s Guide” below it. That subtitle is important, and currently is too small.

    2. Looking through the pages, I think I question the brilliant yellow in your color palette. It doesn’t seem to support the photos at all… and in fact seems to dominate the page (especially the cover as it stands now). I encourage you to put together a 4-color palette based on your photos that includes a dominant color, some supportive neutrals, and make sure you have a value range that includes a light, medium, and dark value. After you have assembled your palette, you should have what you need for the pages. Yellow will not be among those colors – because it doesn’t exist in your photos.

    3. I understand that you think the title font on pg 52 looks chiseled… and it is digitally chiseled. But, it really seems to suggest an older computer game with bitmap chiseled effects. I suggest you keep searching for a font that suggests the oldstyle artisan aspect of this revered profession.

A few tweaks and this will be done I think!

  3. Tom H,

It would help me to know what was changed so I can say if your design is being benefited by your changes. At this point I am somewhat lost as far as what to help with.

    Thanks, Tom G

  4. After I talked with you,
I think the changes you've made have done it good. I do think, however that the font chosen on page 52 doesn't really match the design. I am unsure which type choice you would change it to here, but the color does work. There's a disheveled font you're using here which might work- that actually might tie the Spread page with the rest of the magazine better.
