Above is the original draft.
Above is the updated draft.

This project was competed for digital illustration, which was to illustrate someone we felt who was important to us. At the time I had an epiphany about how to think about a wide spread internet dispute going on between heavy metal fans. The person in this picture is Todd Jones of Nails and in my research of his band, I was lead through a series of their musical influences that showed me that this bickering was unfounded.

The changes are found in the T-shirt decal, which has been completely redone, save for the shirt logo. I left the original picture with it for comparison as well as including the original draft to show the stark differences. This shirt decal had been a real irritation to not have been in full detail, and now it finally fits with the image.

  1. I was wondering how detailed you ended up deciding to go with the shirt decal; I think you found a pretty good balance between nitpicky little details and the overall organic, simplified, "simple shape" feel of the rest of the portrait.

  2. Awesome, I do not see a difference between the original and the updated draft. I would add more detail on your subjects face. I love how the subject blends with the black background creating a two dimensional design.

    1. What was changed was the picture on the shirt, it's fully finished and a lot nicer than where I was going with the original direction.

  3. Tom – a good illustration full of emotion and an expressive face. I’m glad you finished off the t-shirt to match the rest of the artistic style. Is there a title that you could include here… so the illustration is shown being used in a project? Adding some type would make this a more suitable portfolio project. Find a font that expresses the same emotion that the singer is feeling
